Andrew on the riots

Author:

Body:

Australia has become the subject of international ridicule, and not just becaue we can't win a footy game. The recent riots in The Shire have hit headlines around the world sparking belief that racism is arife in Australian society. This has been accompianied by media reports in Asia that Australia is soft on drugs and is losing the battle against such a culture. These reports have been significantly influenced by the increasing media attention payed to the increasing numbers of Australians being caught smuggling drugs in South East Asia. This is all of course in line with Prime Minister Howard's visit to Asia for a number of conferences with other world leaders. It is disapointing to see a nation like Australia recieve such a negative backlash due to the socially ignorant actions of a few individuals. Those who have fuelled the riots in the shire have embarressed themselves, a community and a nation.
